UIW Breaks Ground on Eye Care and Health Institute

At a groundbreaking ceremony held August 14, the University of the Incarnate Word announced construction of the UIW Eye Care and Health Institute located at 2527 E. Commerce Street (corner of Walters and Commerce, two blocks north of St. Philip’s College).

San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind

The Rosenberg School of Optometry is in preliminary talks to partner with the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind to provide eye care services in South San Antonio.

Vision Screening

Consistent with the mission of the Rosenberg School of Optometry clinical program of providing exemplary vision care to the population of San Antonio and South Texas, optometry interns begin their clinical experiences by performing fundamental vision screenings.

Welcome to the UIW Eye Institute

The UIW Eye Institute is an integral part of the Rosenberg School of Optometry, University of the Incarnate Word and is one of the largest eye clinics of its kind. Located in the San Antonio Medical Center, it serves the greater San Antonio area and surrounding South Texas communities. Our doctors of optometry and clinical staff provide the most advanced comprehensive eye exams for patients while providing a warm and friendly environment. We offer comprehensive eye exams for adults and children of all ages in our Adult Eye Care and Pediatric Eye Care services. Our specialty services include Ocular Disease, Vision Therapy, Contact Lens, and Low Vision. As primary eye care providers, we diagnose, treat, and manage visual problems and diseases of the eyes. We also provide comprehensive evaluations for patients with systemic diseases and using medications that have an adverse effect on the eyes and vision. The UIW Eye Institute provides evaluations to determine eligibility and need for medical issues such as cataract or laser eye surgery.

The UIW Eye Institute directs and manages the eye and vision care at several locations in the San Antonio area. This includes our Low Vision Service at the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind, the Frank Bryant Optometry Service, Our Lady of the Lake University, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College, and the University of the Incarnate Word main campus. We also run the Eye and Vision Care Clinic in conjunction with the University of Houston College of Optometry in Fort Worth, TX. The Rosenberg School of Optometry will open the Eastside Clinic in May 2013.

Service to our community extends beyond the walls of the UIW Eye Institute. Area vision screenings for pediatric and adults as well as on-site ocular exams for some nursing homes are provided. Our interns also provide eye and vision care to underserved populations in the United States and overseas through various humanitarian medical missions.

The UIW Eye Institute is a state-of-the-art facility that incorporates traditional patient care with modern clinical technology. There are 28 fully-operational examination rooms, 12 treatment and therapy rooms, and a modern Optical Service with full optical fabrication capabilities. The staff of professional doctors includes both optometrists and ophthalmologists who are recognized leaders in their respective field. We understand that vision is a basic sense and one of the most precious resources to the human body. As the only faith-based school of optometry in the nation, we strive to set ourselves apart with the highest of standards while furnishing our community with unprecedented eye care.
